An aromatic plant that tastes similar to anise but is sweeter and more delicate in flavor. It has a white bulbous base, green celery like stems, and green feathery leaves. The base and stems can be eaten raw in salads or cooked.
These nuts have smooth, hard, dark brown outer shells and bitter inner skin, which once removed reveals the pale colored flesh that is edible once cooked. Chestnuts can be cooked a variety of ways, e.g. roasted, boiled, candied, etc.. They can be eaten by themselves or used in a variety of sweet and savory dishes.
A citrus fruit that looks like a large lemon with yellowish green, bumpy skin. It's grown for its peel, which is pressed for citron essential oil (used as a flavoring or fragrance), as well as candied for baking use.
This is a small bean, beige in color, except for the black colored "eye" at the inner curve. It's a key ingredient in the dish Hoppin' John, and is popular in the South.
